Decision Desk HQ called this race earlier but from the looks of it, none of the other outlets have been willing to do so. They needed to wait for the concession from Democrat Cal Cunningham before they were ready to go on record. Believe it or not, this was actually the single most expensive race in the history of the Senate.
“I just called Sen. (Thom) Tillis to congratulate him on winning reelection to a second term in the U.S. Senate and wished him and his family the best in their continued service in the months and years ahead,” Cunningham said. “The voters have spoken and I respect their decision.” The spending was truly eye-popping, though.
“Cunningham accepted defeat after outraising Tillis during what became the most expensive U.S. Senate race in history. Altogether, the two campaigns and outside groups spent $282 million on the general election, according to the Center for Responsive Politics,” reads the report from AP News. When Senator Tillis contacted Fox News after the win, he spoke ill of the spending.
In his estimation, this is the reason that the race was so tight. He also praised Cunningham for being a gracious opponent. Tillis managed to show a little grace himself as well. This would have been the perfect time to bring up the elephant in the room that no one else was discussing. It was discovered that Cunningham was having an affair with a public relations consultant right before the race began.
These are relatively minor concerns to Tillis at the moment. Now that the North Carolina race is over, the GOP is turning their attention to the upcoming Senate runoffs in Georgia. “Our race in North Carolina is over now, but we’ve got to keep working to defend the American dream by holding the US Senate. Join me in fighting to re-elect @KLoeffler and @Perduesenate in Georgia,” Tillis tweeted.
It didn’t take long for the congratulations to start pouring in either. “Congratulations to @ThomTillis on a hard-fought win! Thank you to the great people in my sister state of North Carolina! Now let’s go win Georgia!” tweeted Nikki Haley. The Tills victory gives the GOP a 49-48 lead when it comes to the current seating. The outstanding seats will be filled once the Georgia runoff is complete.
The other seat is expected to be retained by Alaska Republican Dan Sullivan. There is one other note from North Carolina that we felt compelled to pass along. Decision Desk HQ is also calling this state for President Trump, even though no other outlets have been ready to do so as yet. Perhaps they are hoping that people are not going to ask any more questions, since they assume Biden is already the president-elect.
In the meantime, the fight is far from over. The GOP is doing their best to retain control of the Senate. There is no reason to back down now. Anyone who is looking to the future knows that the runoff races are of the utmost importance. Even the Democrats are strategizing among themselves on how to take these races (and what they will do if they are successful).
The Democrats will also need to take stock of this particular failure. They put over a quarter billion into a losing candidate, a candidate who had been revealed to be an adulterer. This man slept with the wife of an Army veteran and the Democrats were fine with putting an astronomical amount of money behind him.
These are the problems that cannot be fixed by sending Joe Biden out to pray for the soul of the nation. This party may like to pretend that they have the morality aspect of politics down pat but nothing could be further from the truth. We are just grateful that Thom Tillis was able to triumph. Beating an opponent who has seemingly unlimited funding at their disposal is no mean feat.
