Friday Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom pushed even more of the far-left agenda down the eager throats of Californians by signing a host of new bills into law. This included AB 1084. This bill was introduced by Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Campbell) as a way to force stores to comply with their bidding to remove gender from their aisles. This dangerous precedent is not healthy for the people of California and could have very far-reaching implications for stores across the US.
Bills like these are often appropriated by other organizations and done with little thought to how they could change the rest of the industry. Set to become active on January 1, 2024, this bill provides time for people to challenge its legal authority, but how likely is that to really happen? Given the penalties for failure to comply ($250 first infraction, $500 each subsequent) it would seem likely that many retailers will blindly go along with this law; not considering what it could mean in the long term.
The bill states “A retail department store that offers childcare items or toys for sale shall maintain a gender-neutral section or area, to be labeled at the discretion of the retailer, in which a reasonable selection of the items and toys for children that it sells shall be displayed, regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or boys… This section shall apply only to retail department stores that are physically located in California that have a total of 500 or more employees across all California retail department store locations. This section shall not apply to retail department stores that are physically located outside California.”
However, California was at least intelligent enough in one part of the decision. They have left the location, size, and stocking of this toy section up to the owners/managers of these stores (for now). While the set requirement of “500 employees or more employees” for the toy store is helpful to mom & pop shops, it really is just lip service by the Democrats.
The vast majority of small business toy stores specialize in things like antique toys, trains, model cars, and board games. These toys typically are very unisex as it is, and as such these businesses won’t need to make a gender-neutral section as the law currently stands. The general toy store on the other hand are mostly owned and ran by large multi-location corporations. These companies will in turn need to implement these new laws, and at a great cost to their bottom line.
Constructing new floor plans, advertising budgets, and finding new toys that fit into these categories might present a problem. It isn’t as simple as just slapping up some tags, moving a few products, and changing the name of a section or single aisle. Instead, this will take market research, planning, and coordination.
It also gives places like Amazon, and the websites for Target and Wal*Mart a bigger foothold in the market. Why go browse the local store when you can get it online at the same price, maybe even cheaper? This means fewer sales for the local shops and even more for big business.
Do we truly need more unification in the children’s toy section? We’ve taken away a large part of Barbie’s feminine traits and made GI Joe softer. Toy guns look less realistic than any time in history and play kitchens have become laughable at best. If anything, we need more pride. More pride in being American, more pride in being a man or a woman.
