Since leaving office former President Obama has remained in the spotlight while not saying much. That all changed at the anniversary ceremony of the January 6th “insurrection.” While many were surprised at the decision to have a mass gathering and speeches surrounding the events of that day, it still didn’t stop the people in attendance from giving him a captive audience.
“One year ago, a violent attack on our Capitol made it clear just how fragile the American experiment in democracy really is. And while the broken windows have been repaired and many of the rioters have been brought to justice, the truth is that our democracy is at greater risk today than it was back then.” What is it at risk of Obama? More poisoning from the socialist agenda your beloved Democratic party is pushing for? Or maybe more of the cancel culture the progressive policies have created?
This isn’t a fragile experiment at all. It is something that works exceptionally well. The problem Obama is people like you, President Biden, and the squad. Democrats like you are the ones who took the idea of being politicians and changed what it meant. You are the ones who took the system from being for the people to for the party. You continue to push the idea of it being an us versus them system.
Obama kept the Republican blame machine going too. “Although initially rejected by many Republicans, the claims that fanned the flames of violence on January 6th have since been embraced by a sizeable portion of voters and elected officials – many of whom know better. State legislatures across the country have not only made it harder to vote, but some have tried to assert power over core election processes including the ability to certify election results. And those remaining Republican officials and thought leaders who have courageously stood their ground and rejected such anti-democratic efforts have been ostracized, primaried, and driven from the party. Historically, Americans have been defenders of democracy and freedom around the world – especially when it’s under attack. But we can’t serve that role when leading figures in one of our two major political parties are actively undermining democracy at home. We can’t set an example when our own leaders are willing to fabricate lies and cast doubt on the results of free and fair elections. Our system of government has never been automatic. If we want our children to grow up in a true democracy – not just one with elections, but one where every voice matters and every vote counts – we need to nurture and protect it.”
The ending of this brings up two great points. “Our own leaders are willing to fabricate lies and cast doubt on the results of free and fair elections” was something that Obama needs to look back at his party for the history of this. We had it happen back with former VP Gore when he ran against former President G.W. Bush. We then saw it with former President Trump when Hillary Clinton didn’t like that she lost when she didn’t try to campaign anyways. If you want to be judgmental about people arguing how votes are being counted then you need to judge your own party first.
The last great point he had was about the kids. “If we want our children to grow up in a true democracy – not just one with elections, but one where every voice matters and every vote counts – we need to nurture and protect it.” We certainly need to protect it. We don’t protect it by appointing special councils to investigate every election we lose. We don’t protect it by trying to redistrict zones to prevent people from easy access to voting. We don’t protect it by making it easy to rig an election. We protect it by ensuring each voice has an equal chance to be heard.
